I have been watching recruiting commercials from all over the world for the last three days. IMHO, the U.S. ads are the best, with Singapure army videos being even better in terms of creativity, but weaker technically. By the way, the latter are the creations of Saatchi & Saatchi. |

| Against the propaganda and disinformation |

Someone from California just sent me (among tens of other addressees) a letter of her correspondence with some hysterical woman from Yerevan, with all the disinformation about «peaceful demonstrators» being attacked by police.
And she was asking the recipients to forward the letter to others. I am sure there will be many letters like this, circulating in Diaspora and Expat community.
I do not ask anyone to believe government propaganda (which is actually non-existent at this point), but I am asking to think critically about what you are reading. The propaganda cliches like «pregnant women and kids being beaten by the police» are well known and are intended to turn off critical thinking barriers and target to the deepest human instincts.
You may or may not agree with me, but it is not a «Opposition vs Government» conflict, because Levon Ter-Petrosyan leads a rather marginal group within the opposition. Yesterday events were not «peaceful protests» but an attempt to incite a rebellion. Yet many of the participants didn't even understand how they were manipulated and thrown against the police to be beaten just for the sake of attracting CNN’s attention.
I supported none of the candidates during this presidential election: because it wasn't actually an election but an imitation of it. Levon Ter-Petrosyan was much worse choice than Serge Sargisyan, and vice versa. I have always voiced criticism against the government and the ruling elite, just browse through my blog entries to see that. However today Levon Ter-Petrosian is a direct threat to the statehood of Armenia.
Today I am asking all the fellow Armenians to think carefully over everything they read and hear not to become another transmitter of disinformation. |

| Letter to FIDE leadership regarding hate speech by Azerbaijani chess-player |

On November 9th Azerbaijani state information agency APA published an interview with the leader of the Azerbaijani chess-team Mr. Teimur Radjabov, in which he made the following statement regarding the Armenian team: “Regardless of where we meet, enemy remains an enemy. We all hated them.”
In a later communication with the ChessBase.com web site Mr. Radjabov did not deny the fact of such statement, did not apologize for it, instead came up with rather hypocritical statement: “I would like to state that the Azerbaijani people, including me as its representative, are tolerant and will never stoop to pathological nationalism.” A very perverted understanding of tolerance, is not it?
The initial statement by Mr. Radjabov not only constitutes hate speech in its pure form, it also makes impossible his participation in any event held by any organization that values its moral integrity and reputation.
This is why I urge the Leadership of FIDE to unequivocally condemn Mr. Radjabov and take all the relevant disciplinary measures to prevent him from participating in any future FIDE events.
Furthermore, because Mr. Radjabov spoke in the interview on behalf of his teammates, a clear explanation condemning such an expression of hate and xenophobia is required from them too.

Потребовалось четыре года, чтобы наша пресса открыла для себя «шедевр» Томаса де Ваала, и вообще обратила внимание на деятельность, как самого Ваала, так и IWPR — организации, которую он представляет. Хочется надеятся, что не понадобится еще четыре года, чтобы появилось осознание того, насколько большой ущерб стране может быть нанесен деятельностью разного рода ваалов.

"Исследования, ставшие впоследствии книгой "Черный сад", можно назвать опытом шизофреника"
ТОМАС ДЕ ВААЛ.
Этот британский журналист - типичный представитель актуальной западной публицистики, вовлеченный в политические интриги и не ограничивающий свою деятельность лишь пером и бумагой. Специализирующийся на кавказской тематике, он умеет выступать не только как писатель, но и как свидетель, причем на весьма громких судебных процессах. Вероятно, по причине чрезмерного увлечения именно последним жанром ему и было отказано во въездной визе в Россию.
Произошло это событие прошлой весной, когда журналист готовился к презентации русскоязычного издания своего карабахского исследования "Черный сад. Армения и Азербайджан между миром и войной". Перевод известной книги был сделан Олегом Алякринским, редакторские правки - сотрудниками влиятельнейшей британской радиостанции. Сам автор в этой связи пишет: "Я очень благодарен сотрудникам Би-би-си Фамилю Исмайлову и Марку Григоряну, которых по праву считаю своими друзьями. Они не только помогли мне во время написания самой книги, но и осуществили необходимую редакторскую правку русского текста". ( Read more... )

Russian journalist Yana Amelina (![[info]](http://p-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif) malekon) writes that according to Culture and Tourism Ministry Van Provincial Director İzzet Kütükoğlu the renovation of Sourb Khach church on Akhtamar island was actually completed by August 30th, 2006, however the opening ceremony was postponed until April 2007 due to «bad weather conditions».
I am sure this fact (somehow annoticed by Armenians) will stop all the discussions about whether the Akhtamar Show was an attempt by Turks to reconciliate with Armenians or was staged to counter genocide-related pro-Armenian publicity which is traditionally on rise every April.
Another funny story from blogian: The ‘apology’ quoting America’s Ambassador to Armenia John Evans for saying he shouldn’t have referred to the Armenian genocide as such, turns out, was a fabrication by the State Department.
Niagara of lies that falls on us on daily basis frustrates me, however what makes me really sick, is the fact that no matter how blatant and unbelievable the lie is, there are always fellow Armenians who take it as truth. |

| The art of Turkish propaganda. |

We've have been hearing about the necessity of a «dialog» with Turks for a long while, as well as about «forgiving» them. Yet today most of the Turks do not feel sorry about mass killings of native people of their country, they just don't care. Some of them even regret that the Turkish grandfathers failed to «solve the Armenian problem in full» when there was a «chance».
However Turkish propaganda masters the fine art of framing and discrediting its opponents using cleverly balanced mix of PR shows, half-truths and staged «dialogs». In such «dialogs» Armenian side is either represented by some disposable naive (and mostly young) folks, or politically affiliated marginal actors, the likes of Ronald Suny. ( Continue reading... ) |

ТОМАС ДЕ ВААЛ, “ЧЕРНЫЙ САД”: В ПОИСКАХ НЕСУЩЕСТВУЮЩЕГО БАЛАНСА
КАРЕН ВРТАНЕСЯН
Писать критический обзор книги британского журналиста Томаса де Ваала “Черный сад: Армения и Азербайджан между миром и войной” – дело нелегкое и неблагодарное. Агрессивная и последовательная рекламная кампания по продвижению “Черного сада” уже зарезервировала книге статус серьезного и чуть ли не самого нейтрального на сегодняшний день исследования по карабахской проблеме. А Ваал представлен читателю как “осторожный, дотошный и объективный” исследователь.
Впрочем, надо отдать автору должное: “Черный сад” написан увлекательно и читается на одном дыхании. Вследствие чего подробный анализ приведенных в книге фактов и выводов автора может показаться скучным, а попытки обратить внимание читателя на искажения, недомолвки и передергивания могут быть встречены без особого энтузиазма. “Обезвреживание” заложенных в книгу “информационных мин” требует подробных и объемных комментариев, и одно только это ставит потенциального критика в заведомо затруднительное положение.
Кроме того, априори объявлены “слепыми фанатиками” (blind partisans) те, кому книга не по душе, а любая критика со стороны армян или азербайджанцев преподносится как доказательство непредвзятости Ваала. Отдавая себе отчет, что и автора данного обзора будут обвинять в мнительности, излишней педантичности и бескомпромиссности, я тем не менее уверен в том, что необходимость в критическом анализе “Черного сада” назрела давно.
Томас де Ваал – журналист, специализируется по проблемам России и Кавказа. Работал в Би-би-си, газетах Moscow Times и The Times of London. Будучи в России, освещал события в Чечне и является соавтором книги “Chechnya: Calamity in the Caucasus” (“Чечня: бедствие на Кавказе”). Является редактором (руководителем) Кавказского отдела IWPR...
