Turkish Officials Admit To Playing Games With Protocols

By Harut Sassounian
Publisher, The California Courier
Senior Contributor, USA Armenian Life Magazine

With each passing day, the games Turkish officials have been playing with the Protocols are becoming more obvious and ridiculous!

Throughout the long months of negotiations, I repeatedly warned that Turkish officials were not sincere in their announced intention of opening the border with Armenia and establishing diplomatic relations. By acting as if they were seeking reconciliation with Armenia, Turkish leaders simply wanted to prevent further acknowledgment of the Armenian Genocide by third countries, extract maximum concessions from Armenia on Artsakh (Karabagh), and block future territorial demands from Turkey.

The goal is for both parliaments to ratify a deal by Oct. 14 - when the two countries are scheduled to play a World Cup soccer qualifier. The border could then reopen by the end of the year.

'Armenian TV' is on the way
30.12.2008

TRT is now in preparation for the new Armenian TV station, which will begin broadcasts at the end of 2009. An affirmative outlook has been given by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the upcoming Armenian TV channel. The start of radio broadcasts in Armenian and an official website in February will prove as a test for the new television station. The television broadcasts will include famous Armenian musicians, such as Ara Gevorgian, Tata, Nune Yesayan, Andre and Sirusho as well as Kardeş Türküler and other Turkish groups that sing Armenian songs. Categorized as a family channel, Armenian TV will provide top headlines of developments in Turkey and Armenia on their newsreel. The new satellite channel, which will employ Armenian staff members, will also focus on those living in Armenia as well as on Armenians living in Turkey.

Hayrapetian said the FFA has decided to ban Armenian soccer fans from bringing banners referring to the Armenian genocide in the Ottoman Empire and other “political” issues into the stadium. “Only football-related placards will be allowed there,” he said. “A victory for Armenia would send a much stronger message that a few banners.”

Talat speaks against the genocide resolution [Oct. 15th, 2007|06:46 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]

In 1915 Mehmet Talat Pasha was on the very top of the Turkish state genocidal hiearchy. Now some Mehmet Talat speaks against recognizing the crimes committed by his historical «twin».

TALAT HEADS TO NEW YORK FOR TALKS WITH BAN

Today's Zaman, Turkey
Oct 15 2007

Turkish Cypriot President Mehmet Ali Talat departed on Sunday from İstanbul for New York, where he will have talks with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday and urge the secretary-general to be more active on the Cyprus issue.

Speaking to reporters upon his departure, Talat touched upon the controversy over the US House's adoption of a resolution labeling the mass killings of Anatolian Armenians during World War I as genocide.

"This resolution is both strange and a little funny; because it is unbelievable that an assembly of another country is making a decision concerning incidents -- after around 100 years passed -- over which history should make a decision," Talat told reporters, noting that he did not have any meetings scheduled with US officials when asked whether he would bring up the issue during his meetings in New York.Read more... )

What war on terror? [Oct. 15th, 2007|12:53 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]

Jasper Gerard
Sunday October 14, 2007
The Observer

Remind me, what is the war on terror for?

The world is viewed through the prism of a war on terror. President
Bush dismisses the attempted slaughter of a people as a ticklish
detail. He rejects a historic Congressional decision to call Turkey's
murder of 1.5 million Armenians 'genocide'. And not because he denies
butchery took place; rather, Turkey is a key ally, so best let
sleeping Armenians lie. One sees his point, naturally. The friendship
of a Muslim nation provides cover. Plus nationalist Turks, successors
to the 'young Turks' who nearly snuffed out the Armenians, are
itching to invade northern Iraq. So best placate Turkey...

But what is the war on terror for? Isn't it a response to a war of
terror, whose first shot was fired in 1915, when Turkey's interior
minister ordered Armenians to be 'terminated'? Why does the death of
3,000 in New York weigh heavier than 1.5 million? And if the war on
terror possesses moral as well as military force, shouldn't it be
about principle as well as pragmatism?

Otherwise, aren't we just the other side's enemy combatant?
Guantanamo, rendition, detention: staring through the prism, we've
lost perspective.

Saying truth through their teeth (Turkish way) [Sep. 3rd, 2007|10:32 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]

The ADL controversy somehow transformed the way the Turks were talking about the genocide. (Well at least the English-language Turkish press’ way of talking) a lot. Before it was lying through teeth, something that Turks master very well, but now it's saying whispering truths through their fiercly gritted teeth. Well, still it's better than outright lies.

Turkey has already lost the "genocide" battle. There is simply no one — except people with a vested financial or political interest — who believe Turkey's side of the story. Whether "the events of 1915" amount to "genocide" or not is not even debated in the West. This is one of those situations where perception becomes reality. Turkey can blame the nefarious Armenians and all kinds of anti-Turkish lobbies for this situation, but the fact of the matter is that suppressing free debate on this issue and accusing academics organizing conferences does not help the slogan "leave history to historians."

Akhtamar Show [Apr. 25th, 2007|07:27 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]

Russian journalist Yana Amelina ([info]malekon) writes that according to Culture and Tourism Ministry Van Provincial Director İzzet Kütükoğlu the renovation of Sourb Khach church on Akhtamar island was actually completed by August 30th, 2006, however the opening ceremony was postponed until April 2007 due to «bad weather conditions».

I am sure this fact (somehow annoticed by Armenians) will stop all the discussions about whether the Akhtamar Show was an attempt by Turks to reconciliate with Armenians or was staged to counter genocide-related pro-Armenian publicity which is traditionally on rise every April.

Another funny story from blogian:
The ‘apology’ quoting America’s Ambassador to Armenia John Evans for saying he shouldn’t have referred to the Armenian genocide as such, turns out, was a fabrication by the State Department.

Niagara of lies that falls on us on daily basis frustrates me, however what makes me really sick, is the fact that no matter how blatant and unbelievable the lie is, there are always fellow Armenians who take it as truth.

«We are all Armenians, yeah» [Feb. 2nd, 2007|09:44 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , ]

Two days ago here in Yerevan I had a nice conversation with a cab-driver. Actually it wasn't even a conversation but a monolog. His monolog. First he asked me if I had seen the broadcast of the Hrant Dink's funeral and what I thought about it. «I rarely watch TV» — I answered, which is true: usually I do not watch TV. I had seen Dink's funeral though, but kept that to myself not to influence his opinion anyhow. So he continued: «It's all bullshit. They just ordered people to go to the streets and stage a show there, you know?» Then he talked about lots of other subjects, from coming elections to Putin to Iraq, and most of his opinions were rather sober and smart. However, what he said about the funeral was the most important to me. It's nice to know that at least, not all of my compatriots have lost their minds these days. At some point I was ready to hug him, then decided to limit my gratitude to a generous tip.

Yesterday CNN-Turk aired an amateur video taken in the police station where the assassin of Hrant Dink was kept. You can watch it here. No need to know Turkish to understand what‘s going on there. Police officers pose with the killer and there is a Turkish flag in the background. Later the guy holds another flag, and the policemen are again next to him posing. Yes, they treat him like a hero and I will not be surprised to know that they asked for autographs after this joyfull filming-session. «Hey, Aygul, look what I've got here. An autograph from the Ogun himself! What Ogun? Oh woman, don't you watch any TV?! That guy who killed that infidel dog!»

Sounds crazy? Not really. We have the example of Ramil Safarov becoming a celebrity like that, don't we?

Сдохни, армянин! | Die Armenian! [die like a dog] [Jan. 22nd, 2007|10:23 am]
[Tags|, , , , , ]

While international TV-channels are broadcastig "Wow, wow, we loved Hrant Dink so much" made-in-Turkey show, while the liberals and cosmopolitans of all sorts are trying to persuade us that so-well advertized demonstration of Turkish compassion is sincere, the Turkish reality again reminds about itself.

I got this photo couple of minutes ago from Istanbul. There on the wall of the Armenian church in Kadigyugh it is written:
One Hrant died, let it be many hrants like that. Die Armenian! [die like a dog]

Why am I sure this one will never make its way to CNN?
